BLACK IRIS
This design represents another variation on the theme of Jordan’s national flower, the Black Iris. Irises, first cultivated in ancient Egypt, have been associated with royalty for millennia. They first appear in stucco on one of the walls of the great Minoan palace at Knossos. Later they were carved in stone at Karnak, in Egypt, to commemorate the victory of Tehutimes III over Asia Minor. Later of course, in the 12th Century, Louis VII of France adopted the ‘Fleur de Lis’ as the badge of French Royalty. Here the velvety blackness of their leaves is contrasted with the intense fiery orange of
the stamens.
