ELEMENTA
This design is inspired by geometry, as it is understood in the Islamic tradition. One of the three aniconic or non-figurative disciplines in Islamic art, alongside calligraphy and islimi, geometry is recognised to reflect the fundamental constitution of the universe. Intricate, clever and strikingly contemporary, this design displays the awe-inspiring generative power of geometry to unfold a pattern from basic principles. In Islamic Art, the square, with its four equilateral sides, is symbolic of the equally important elements of nature: earth, air, fire and water. Without any one of the four, the physical world, represented by a circle that inscribes the square, would collapse upon itself and cease to exist.
