PRAISEWORTHY
For nearly fourteen centuries calligraphy has been the most important medium of artistic expression in Islamic culture, reflecting the supreme value of the Koran. The discouragement of the representation of the human form was also a highly significant factor in the development of calligraphy's key place in the Islamic arts. For this design an angular, square Kufic style was chosen to render the phrase, ‘Praise be to the Praiseworthy’. Named from the town of Kufah, established in Iraq in 621 AD, the script is suited above all to writing on stone or metal, for painting or carving on the walls of mosques. Read from right to left, the symmetry of the phrase is beautifully captured in the mirrored elements of the script.
