SUN AND MOON
At the heart of this design is the lotus flower, discovered in the complex geometry of overlapping circles and squares. In Egyptian Mythology the lotus grows from darkness to the light, floating on the surface of the water apparently separated from its roots deep in the mud beneath. This suggests the idea of detachment from the material world. So here on the plate the lotus grows from the centre, where the food will be displayed, out towards the light. In addition the designer has incorporated a circular sun and moon motif and a square meander. The slender roots of the lotus reach down to the reflection of the half moon in water, as the flowers strain for the sun. There are twenty-eight moons on every plate, with eighteen on each saucer and ten on each cup, to reflect the lunar month.
