ZAHRA

This beautiful scrolling wave-like pattern is derived from traditional Islamic manuscript illumination. Based on a popular arabesque design, variations of this type of design work can also be found on metal work, wood carving, stone carving and ceramics. The stylised floral motif embellished in gold echoes the use of gold in illumination. As with many aspects of Islamic art, while the rules of ornamentation seem, when first explained, discouragingly rigid, tied as they are ultimately to the laws of geometry, in fact Islamic decoration offers, in its repetition and complexity, the possibility for infinite growth and variation.
